Face treatment is one of the most popular salon and beauty treatments available these days, as this is not only good for the skin, it is also relaxing and rejuvenating.

There are different types of face treatments available, both manual/hands-on and those treatments that use electrotherapy, each with specific benefits for the person taking them.

Cleansing Face Treatment

All face treatment types follow similar structure and order. It begins with the removal of cosmetics or make up and then cleansing which is normally done twice to make sure the face is thoroughly cleaned. The next step is exfoliation for removal of dead skin cells and for smoothing the skin surface. Your salon specialist will then massage the face, including other areas such as neck, scalp, shoulders, and sometimes even the hands and the feet. The next step is the mask application to tone the skin. The final step involves the application of neck, eye, and facial creams.

Hands-on Face Treatment

Hands-on face treatment doesn’t use any electrotherapy machines and will only involve a therapist using her hands to perform the face treatment. However in some cases, the treatment will involve the use of a steam machine before or during the cleansing for opening up the pores and to allow a deeper and more effective cleansing action. While a steam machine is considered as an electrotherapy machine, it is not as invasive as other electrotherapy machines.

Oftentimes, salon use essential oils as a basis of their hands-on face treatment. Special types of facial masks are used on hands-on facial treatments. These masks could be based on clay or mud to clean the face deeply or as a soothing base for those with sensitive skin. The masks are sometimes used for setting, which means that the mask will be gently lifted or peeled off the skin after it is set.

Electrotherapy Face Treatment

There are different types of electrotherapy face treatments, including:

Galvanic Treatment – metal applicators or rollers are used to produce a deeper cleansing effect. This treatment is believed to help reduce blemishes and spots, depending on the type of active product used.

High Frequency Treatment – this face treatment uses a direct and high frequency through a glass electrode placed or applied to the skin.

Microcurrent Treatment – this face treatment is also called a non-surgical or non-invasive face lift. This type of treatment uses current for lifting and toning the muscles on the face as well as for improving the texture and color of the skin and for softening the facial lines.

All electrotherapy facial treatments cause a slight burning or tingling sensation on the skin; however, this is normal.

While a lot of people will gain benefit from the relaxation and restorative effects of face treatment, this treatment has some contraindications, especially for electrotherapy face treatment, which any trained face therapist is aware of. Therefore, you should first go through a series of consultation with your dermatologist or skin therapist to find out what face treatment best suits your skin type and personal preference.
